They ordered another round of beers and sat quietly for a time, each dealing privately with their respective demons—Del herself content with the silence that had overtaken them. Falconet was a good guy. It had been therapeutic, the chance to unburden herself to him. She guessed that was what real couples did. They served as gym mats to each other, wraparound padding to absorb some of the blows of life on the other’s behalf. Accepting the bruises, the scars, that came double for conjoined hearts. Falconet promised they would find Lissa and bring her back safe. And she believed him now, the confidence in him, transferring across lines of love to her, making her more confident in the process. That’s what being a couple was all about. That’s what having a mate did for you. It gave you strength. It allowed you hope.

Del sipped her beer and studied Falconet, his gaze beyond the window. His thoughts off beyond the bayou. She could love this man, she thought. Did love him, perhaps. But could she ever fully commit?

They continued to sip in silence.
